Workshop 1: Personal Core Values – Your Life Navigator

It is not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are

Discovering your personal core values is one of the critical actions that can make an amazing difference in how you live your life. As a person, our values reflect the fundamental choices of who we want to be. We derive a sense of fulfillment – ultimate happiness – when living our personal values because our motivations and actions are aligned with the aspirations of who we want to be.

Your values are unique to you, and everyone has their own personal values. Your values apply to every element of your life: work, home, or social contacts. Knowing and living your values help you understand what drives you – what you want, your passions, your life purposes, and which directions you want to go. Whether it’s partner, career, friends, interests, relationships, political opinion, or thousands of other life choices.

Think of your life as a tree. Your values are the roots that keep you grounded in what is important, to allow all other elements to flourish. Our values change over time and deepen as we better understand the universe, life experiences, and who we are. Knowing your top values, and understanding how to stay true to yourself is critical to be happy and successful in your life.

There are two types of values: (1) Fear-based, and (2) Consciousness-based values. Fear-based values are the values that you accumulate from your family, teachers, and society (external resources). They are “have-to’s”. And when you live your life with fear-based values, you will always ask yourself “What am I missing?”. Consciousness-based values are “want-to’s”. They bring you content and fulfillment when you are living them. Thus, it is important to know if you are living now with your fear-based values or consciousness-based values.

Choosing and knowing your values can provide a number of benefits:

  • Reduce stress
  • Make better decisions
  • Find environments and people that support your aspirations
  • Increase joy and happiness
  • Support your growth and development
  • Help in times of conflict or confusion
  • Enhance motivation.

The interesting thing is, whether knowing or not, choosing or not, all of us have a set of personal core values. It is your choice to take time to discover your core values and walk through life with that powerful guidance.
